Art Intent
At Springwood Federation, our intent is to inspire pupils through the study of local and renowned artists and craftspeople, encouraging them to appreciate diverse artistic styles and cultural expressions. We aim to provide a rich and varied curriculum that offers pupils opportunities to explore a wide range of media and techniques. Through this, pupils develop their creativity, individuality, and confidence as artists, building progressively on prior learning.
Our curriculum fosters an understanding of art as a form of communication and personal expression, while developing technical skills and critical appreciation.
We implement our art curriculum through a carefully sequenced long-term plan that ensures progression in knowledge, skills, and vocabulary across drawing, painting, sculpture, textiles, printmaking, and collage.
Art Implementation
Implementation includes:
- Units of work inspired by the styles and techniques of artists and craftspeople such as Shirley Hughes, Orla Kiely, Holbein, Claude Monet, and Indigenous Australian artists.
- Opportunities for pupils to develop observational drawing, colour theory, sculptural techniques, and textile skills through hands-on projects.
- Integration of art history and critical analysis to deepen understanding of context, symbolism, and artistic intent.
- Use of a wide variety of media and tools to encourage experimentation and creativity.
- Differentiated teaching and scaffolding to support all learners, including those with SEND.
- Regular assessment of skills development and creative outcomes to inform planning and celebrate achievement.
- Cross-curricular links to enrich learning, for example, connecting art with History, Geography, and Science.
