    PE Intent

At Springwood Federation, our intent is to provide a high-quality physical education curriculum that inspires all pupils to succeed, develop physical confidence, and excel in a range of physical activities and competitive sports. We aim to foster a lifelong love of physical activity by promoting health, fitness, and well-being.

Through engaging and challenging PE lessons, pupils learn to take risks, develop resilience, and understand the importance of maintaining a healthy, active lifestyle now and in the future.

    PE implementation

Our PE curriculum is delivered using the Complete PE scheme, supported by guidance from the Association for Physical Education (AFPE), ensuring a broad, balanced, and progressive programme of study.

    Implementation includes:

    • A long-term plan covering key areas such as invasion games, net and wall games, striking and fielding, gymnastics, dance, athletics, and outdoor adventurous activities.
    • Swimming lessons in Year 5, with additional top-up sessions in Year 6 for pupils who need to meet the expected standards.
    • Structured lesson plans that develop physical skills, tactical awareness, and teamwork through progressive challenges.
    • Opportunities for pupils to participate in intra- and interschool competitions to develop competitive spirit and sportsmanship.
    • Differentiated activities and support to include all pupils, including those with SEND.
    • Regular assessment of physical skills and fitness to inform planning and celebrate progress.
    • Promotion of health education, including understanding the benefits of physical activity, nutrition, and well-being.

    PE Impact

As a result of our intent and implementation:

    • Pupils develop physical confidence, competence, and a positive attitude towards physical activity.
    • They demonstrate improved fitness, coordination, and motor skills across a range of activities.
    • Pupils understand the importance of health and fitness and make informed choices about their lifestyle.
    • Participation in competitive sports fosters teamwork, resilience, and fair play.
    • Swimming outcomes meet or exceed national expectations, with most pupils achieving expected standards by the end of Year 6.
    • Subject leaders and governors monitor curriculum delivery and pupil progress to ensure continuous improvement.
    • Pupils are equipped with the skills and motivation to lead healthy, active lives beyond school.
