Maths Intent

At Springwood Federation, we believe that a high-quality mathematics education is essential for developing pupils’ confidence, curiosity, and competence in mathematics. Our intent is to nurture a deep understanding of mathematical concepts through a curriculum that is coherent, sequential, and accessible to all pupils, including those with SEND and disadvantaged backgrounds.

We aim to develop pupils who:

  • Understand and apply mathematical concepts fluently and confidently.
  • Can reason mathematically, solve problems, and think critically.
  • Communicate their mathematical thinking clearly using precise vocabulary.
  • Develop resilience and a growth mindset towards challenges in mathematics.
  • Appreciate the relevance of mathematics in everyday life and future learning.

Our curriculum is designed to build strong foundations through a clear progression of skills and knowledge, ensuring pupils make strong progress from their individual starting points and are well-prepared for the next stage of their education.

Maths Implementation

Our mathematics curriculum closely follows the National Curriculum and is structured to promote mastery through:

  • A carefully sequenced long-term plan that builds on prior knowledge and revisits key concepts regularly.
  • Medium-term plans that break down objectives into manageable units, incorporating fluency, reasoning, and problem-solving activities.
  • A six-part lesson structure that includes fluency starters, new learning, talk tasks, development activities, independent practice, and plenaries.
  • Use of concrete, pictorial, and abstract representations to support understanding.
  • Targeted support and scaffolding for SEND and disadvantaged pupils, including pre-teaching and personalised interventions.
  • Regular formative and summative assessments to identify gaps and inform teaching.
  • Encouragement of mathematical language development to enable pupils to explain and justify their reasoning.
  • Ongoing professional development for staff to ensure high-quality teaching and leadership in mathematics.

Maths Impact

As a result of our intent and implementation:

  • Pupils at Springwood demonstrate strong progress in mathematics from their individual starting points.
  • Attainment in mathematics meets or exceeds national averages for non-SEND pupils and shows significant improvement for targeted SEND pupils.
  • Pupils exhibit confidence in their mathematical abilities, enjoy engaging with challenging problems, and communicate their reasoning effectively.
  • Our school community values mathematics as a vital skill for lifelong learning and success.
  • Subject leaders and governors monitor and evaluate the quality of teaching and pupil outcomes rigorously, ensuring continuous improvement.
  • Pupils are well-prepared for transition to secondary education with a solid foundation in mathematical knowledge and skills.

Maths – What does it look like?

Maths Meetings: Strengthening Core Skills Daily

Maths Meetings at Springwood Federation are brief, focused sessions designed to reinforce essential mathematical skills such as number bonds, place value, mental arithmetic, and rapid recall of key facts. These daily or regular meetings provide pupils with consistent practice that builds fluency and confidence, supporting their ability to reason mathematically and solve problems effectively. By using engaging activities and varied representations, Maths Meetings help pupils make rich connections across mathematical ideas, laying a strong foundation for more complex learning.

Times Tables Mastery: Dedicated Lessons for Fluency

Fluency in times tables is fundamental to pupils’ success in mathematics, underpinning skills in multiplication, division, fractions, and problem-solving. At Springwood Federation, we dedicate two focused lessons at the start of every maths unit to times tables practice. These lessons use a range of strategies—including visual aids, chanting, games, and timed challenges—to develop rapid recall and deepen understanding. This targeted approach ensures pupils build automaticity and confidence, enabling them to access new mathematical concepts with greater ease and enjoyment.
